Cool, that's interesting actually. I'm pretty sure the book I was thinking of draws on a lot of celtic mythology, which explains the name similarities. The baobansith in the book is pretty similar to the creature you described and its name is apparently pronounced like "baavan shee" - also very similar, it makes for an interesting read if you like fantasy.
There are also such wonderfully easy-to-pronounce characters as the Each Uisge, the prince of water horses. Have you ever come across that one?

Actually its a soul-sucking faery from Scottish myth who appears as a woman dressed in green.
